First day of Ramadan 2027: Date in India and Meaning
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar and the month of obligatory fasting, from true dawn to sunset. In India it begins after the new crescent is seen on the evening of the 29th of Sha'ban, or once Sha'ban completes 30 days.
In India
Tue, 9 February 2027
Expected, subject to moon sighting. In Saudi Arabia (Umm al-Qura): Mon, 8 February 2027.
The year after: Sat, 29 January 2028.
The obligation
The fast is prescribed in the Quran (2:183 to 185), the passage that also names Ramadan as the month in which the Quran was revealed.
Moon sighting
The Prophet said: start fasting on seeing the crescent and stop on seeing it, and if it is hidden, complete thirty days of Sha'ban (Sahih al-Bukhari 1909). This is why India, which follows local sighting, usually begins a day after Saudi Arabia.
