Editorial policy
Sunni One is an independent reference for Sunni Muslims. These are the rules every page follows. They exist so that you can trust what you read here, and check it.
We describe; we do not rule
Sunni One does not issue fatwas. Pages say what a school, a scholar or a tradition holds, and who holds it: "the Hanafi position is", "according to Bahar-e-Shariat". Every page on practice ends with a reminder to ask a qualified scholar about your own situation.
Every tradition in its own terms
- Practices kept in particular traditions, such as fatiha, niyaz, milad and urs in the Ahle Sunnat (Barelvi) tradition, are described as practised in that tradition, with a short, neutral note on how other Sunni schools see them.
- Where the four schools of law differ, the page says which school holds which view.
- Comparisons between Sunni and Shia Islam, or between Sunni movements, describe each side as it understands itself. They contain no verdicts and no language that declares anyone outside Islam. Our Shia and Sunni guide is written this way.
- We say whether a person or organisation is Sunni or Shia only where at least two reliable sources document it, and we never speculate about the beliefs of living people.
Sources
- Every page on religion lists its sources: at least three, including a primary source (the Quran, or a hadith with its collection and number) wherever a practice rests on revelation, and the scholarship it draws on.
- Every hadith number we cite has been checked against the text of the hadith before publication. Sahih Muslim is cited by Fu'ad Abd al-Baqi's numbering, as on sunnah.com, where each citation links.
- Arabic text is never typed or generated by us. When a page shows Arabic, it comes from an established published source and is checked against a second one.
- Automated checks enforce these rules: a page that breaks them cannot be published.
Who writes the pages
Pages are compiled by the Sunni One editors from the sources they cite. They have not been reviewed by a scholar, and we do not claim that they have; we will say so on the page when a qualified reviewer has checked it.
Languages
Pages in Hindi, Urdu and Bengali are first drafted, then proofread by a native speaker. Until then they are kept out of search engines.
Tools and numbers
Prayer times, Islamic dates and the qibla are computed, not copied, and the methodology pages say exactly how: prayer times, Islamic dates and qibla.
Independence
Sunni One carries no advertising and takes no payment for what it publishes. It has no affiliation with any movement, organisation or government.
Mistakes
When we get something wrong, we correct it and record the correction, with its date, in the corrections log.
